Ouida Books, a leading Lagos-based publishing house, has unveiled Get Rid of Your Phone, Mummy, a thought-provoking children’s book by Nigerian-based writer and fashion consultant Mazzi Odu. The book, published under Ouida’s new children’s imprint Bookstore, was launched at a vibrant event at the company’s Ikeja premises.
The launch attracted notable figures from the literary and arts community, including Chief Charles Anyian-Osigwe, sponsor of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Awards, award-winning author Henry Akubiro, fashion designer Kelechi Odu, and Ouida Books CEO Lola Shoneyin. Renowned arts and book editor Dr. Olaokun Soyinka was also in attendance.
The event featured a book reading, a discussion with the author, and a signing session. Get Rid of Your Phone, Mummy, illustrated by Adulphona Imuede, explores how digital distractions affect parent-child relationships. The story follows Tobe, a five-year-old girl in Lagos, whose mother is constantly on her phone. With the help of a magical character, Uduak, Tobe and her best friend Simi embark on a digital detox that helps their mothers reconnect with them.
Speaking at the event, Mazzi Odu admitted that her personal experience inspired the book. “I am so guilty, I wrote a book about it! I am delighted that the story resonates with readers,” she shared.
Lola Shoneyin, CEO of Ouida Books, described the book as “a fun and transformative read highlighting the challenges children face in an era dominated by digital devices.” She emphasized the importance of reviving a reading culture among children through engaging bedtime stories.
Mazzi Odu, of Ugandan descent, is a respected writer and editor whose work has appeared in Vogue and Vanity Fair. She holds degrees from the University of Bristol and the London School of Economics and is a key figure in global discussions on fashion and cultural identity.
