Ambassador Umar Illiya Damagum, has dismissed rumors of his resignation, insisting he remains in office. He clarified that he has not stepped down and accused detractors of spreading falsehoods to undermine him.
In a statement released by his personal assistant, Nuru Shehu, Damagum reaffirmed his position, stating that the PDP constitution grants the national chairman a four-year term in the first instance. “I have not resigned,” he emphasized.
The controversy stems from growing calls for him to relinquish the position to the North Central zone, which was originally meant to hold the seat. Damagum, who hails from the North East, initially served as deputy national chairman before assuming his current role.
The statement condemned those behind the resignation rumors, describing them as “mischief makers” attempting to tarnish his reputation. “This malicious content against Ambassador Damagum is fake, defamatory, and a height of criminality,” it stated.
Damagum urged PDP members, party elders, stakeholders, and support groups to ignore the false reports. He reassured them that he remains committed to his duties and will continue working for the party’s progress.
The statement also warned that legal action could be taken against those spreading misinformation. “We assure the sponsors of this evil that soon the law of the land will catch up with them,” it concluded.
