Polytechnics Seek Solar Power for Growth

In a bid to boost technical education and economic development, the Committee of Chairmen Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics has partnered with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to push for urgent solar power interventions. The meeting focused on providing sustainable energy, especially for polytechnics not connected to the national grid.

Senator Barnabas Gemade, leading the committee representing 36 federal polytechnics, stressed the need to accelerate the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI). This program aims to deliver clean and reliable energy to key public institutions, ensuring a stable power supply for polytechnics.

REA’s managing director, Abba Aliyu, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding access to sustainable energy through initiatives like the Energising Education Programme (EEP). Already in its third phase, the EEP has installed solar hybrid power plants in 20 federal universities and three teaching hospitals, improving learning environments.

Beyond power supply, the meeting also explored skill development opportunities in renewable energy. The committee proposed the establishment of training centers in polytechnics, equipping students with practical skills in solar technology, installation, and maintenance to enhance their employability.

Aliyu assured the delegation of REA’s willingness to collaborate on renewable energy expansion, aligning with the federal government’s vision for energy security and economic sustainability. “We are committed to ensuring polytechnics are equipped with clean energy solutions,” he stated.

Both REA and the polytechnic committee pledged to work together to implement impactful solar energy projects, which will not only improve education but also contribute to Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy.
