INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, led the solemn gathering, which was attended by National Commissioners, former senior INEC officials, members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and Nwosu’s family members, including his wife and children.

Prof. Nwosu, who led NEC from 1989 to 1993, is best remembered for overseeing the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest but later annulled. INEC praised his impact on the country’s electoral system, acknowledging his lasting contribution to democracy.

His son, Emeka Nwosu, expressed gratitude for the tributes, urging Nigerians to build on his father’s legacy and work towards a stronger democracy. He emphasized unity and the need to uphold democratic values in the nation’s progress.

Prof. Yakubu noted that while the 1993 election is now officially recognized, Prof. Nwosu’s contributions have not been adequately honored. He called on authorities to rectify this oversight and posthumously recognize his role.

INEC pledged to continue appreciating Nwosu’s service and commended his family for their support during his challenging tenure. The commission expressed hope that his contributions would always be remembered in Nigeria’s democratic history.
