At least three soldiers were killed, and three others, including a Brigade Commander, were injured when terrorists attacked a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wajiroko, Borno State. The attack occurred late Monday night, prompting an immediate military response.
A military source confirmed that the Brigade Commander was injured when his vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while heading to reinforce the base under attack. The explosion delayed the re-enforcement effort, leaving the FOB vulnerable.
According to reports, the first response team was hit by IEDs, forcing the 25 Brigade Commander to lead a second rescue mission. However, while en route, his Hilux vehicle triggered another explosive near Damboa, resulting in casualties.
Air support was dispatched, and pilots reported seeing fire at the base while troops were seen retreating toward Sabon Gari, suggesting that the FOB may have been overrun. The security situation remains uncertain, with the military on high alert.
Despite repeated attacks in the region, including a deadly assault on a military base in Damboa earlier this year, terrorists continue to target security forces. President Bola Tinubu had previously ordered an investigation into such incidents, but fresh attacks raise concerns over troop safety and operational preparedness.
The Defence Headquarters has yet to issue an official statement, while security analysts call for enhanced military strategies to counter the growing threats in Borno State.
