INEC Flags Missing Contact Details in Kogi Senator Recall Petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over the recall petition against the suspended senator representing Kogi Central, citing missing contact details of the petitioners.

INEC stated that the covering letter accompanying the petition lacked the required contact address, telephone numbers, and email addresses of the representatives, as mandated by Clause 1(f) of its Regulations and Guidelines. The only contact information provided was a general location, “Okene, Kogi State,” and a single phone number belonging to the lead petitioner.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this after the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja on Tuesday. He reiterated that the recall process follows constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s 2024 Recall Regulations.

The petition, submitted with six bags of documents, reportedly contained signatures from over half of the 474,554 registered voters across 902 polling units in five local government areas: Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, and Okene.

Olumekun emphasized that for the recall process to proceed, the petition must meet all submission requirements. INEC is currently exploring alternative means to contact the petitioners and will announce the next steps once compliance is confirmed. He assured the public that the commission remains committed to a transparent and lawful recall process while dismissing speculations circulating on social media.
