Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called on the media to play a responsible role in national security, emphasizing that “their pens are mightier than the gun.” He made the statement during the Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation Media Chat for the First Quarter of 2025, held in Gombe State.
Represented by Maj. Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, Oluyede stressed the need for collaboration between the military and the media to maintain peace and protect national interests. He urged journalists to ensure accuracy in their reports, as misinformation could threaten national unity and security.
The army chief highlighted recent military successes, including the rescue of kidnapped citizens and the restoration of normal activities in conflict-affected regions. He emphasized that the media’s role in shaping public perception of military operations is vital to national stability.
Maj. Gen. GU Chibuisi, Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, explained that the media chat serves to strengthen ties between the army and the press. The event, themed “Harnessing Whole of Society Approach to Enhance Information Management: National Security in Perspective,” aims to promote transparency and trust.
Ali Muhammed Ali, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who chaired the occasion, highlighted the importance of mutual respect between the army and the media. He noted that open dialogue would enhance understanding and foster a secure environment for all Nigerians.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to working closely with journalists to ensure the accurate reporting of security matters while safeguarding the country’s interests.
