The House of Representatives has taken a major step toward removing the constitutional immunity granted to the vice president, governors, and their deputies. The proposed amendment, which passed second reading on Wednesday, aims to enhance accountability, curb corruption, and eliminate impunity in public office.
This bill was among 42 constitutional amendment proposals that advanced in the House, following the approval of 39 similar bills on Tuesday, bringing the total number to 81.

Other key proposals include a bill to separate the roles of the Attorney-General of the Federation and State Attorneys-General from those of the Minister and Commissioners for Justice. Another seeks to grant citizenship rights to foreign spouses of Nigerian women while ensuring greater representation of women and youths in government appointments.
Additionally, the House considered bills advocating for the creation of new states, including Ijebu, Ife-Ijesa, Tiga, Orlu, and Etiti. These bills passed second reading without debate and have been referred for further legislative review.
