Kano Extends Certificate Recertification by 60 Days

The Kano State Government has granted a 60-day extension for the ongoing recertification of Certificates of Occupancy (CofO), urging landowners to take advantage of the additional time.

Abduljabbar Mohammed Umar, the state’s Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning, made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday. The extension follows the expiration of the initial deadline of April 1, 2025, which had been moved from January 24 to allow for the Eid holiday and give residents more time.

Despite the extensions, Umar noted that there has been a low turnout of property owners participating in the recertification process. He emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating it is key to creating a reliable land database that will help in government planning, revenue generation, and infrastructure development.

Since its launch on November 25, 2024, the initiative has documented 241,025 properties across six major local government areas, including Nassarawa, Fagge, and Tarauni. Umar stressed that this process would help the government track land ownership and identify gaps in infrastructure.

The Commissioner also warned that landowners who do not comply within the new deadline risk losing their property titles. Names of non-compliant owners will be published in national newspapers and displayed at key government locations like the Kano State Library and Audu Bako Secretariat.

To assist applicants, the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) will continue offering support through online platforms, helplines, and physical service centers. The ministry also plans to introduce a Sectional Titling policy to streamline land documentation for properties in estates and markets.

Umar urged residents to use the extended deadline to regularize their property documents and ensure legal ownership of their land.
