An unnamed facility manager and two other employees of the defunct Aba Textile Mills Plc, situated in Aba, Abia State, have been apprehended by authorities. Their arrest follows allegations of theft and the vandalism of properties belonging to the once-prominent textile manufacturing facility.
This development comes shortly after the Abia State government publicly announced its intentions to revive both the Aba Textile Mills Plc and the Star Paper Mill Limited, both located within the bustling commercial hub of Aba. The government’s reactivation plans aimed to bring back economic activity and employment to the region.
The Commissioner for Information in Abia State, Okey Kanu, addressed members of the press following the conclusion of this week’s State Executive Council meeting. The meeting was presided over by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia, the state capital. During the briefing, Commissioner Kanu conveyed the government’s firm stance on the matter. “The government warns unscrupulous persons whose stock in trade is to steal and vandalise its property to desist from such criminal tendencies or be ready to face the wrath of the law,” Kanu stated, underscoring the seriousness with which the government views these actions.
In a separate announcement, the Abia State Chief Judge, Justice Lillian Abai, has declared a one-week Easter vacation for all judges within the state’s judiciary. This temporary recess will allow judicial officers a period of rest during the Easter season.
The Acting Chief Registrar of the High Court of Justice in Umuahia, Beauty Allwell, informed reporters that this approved vacation is in accordance with the state’s High Court Practice Procedure of 2021, which outlines the schedule and procedures for judicial activities within Abia State.
Allwell specified that the Easter vacation for the Abia State judiciary will commence on Monday, April 21, and will continue until Sunday, April 28. She urged all branches of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and the general public to take note of this scheduled closure of the courts during this period.
