Airtel Africa Invests $316.7 Million to Boost 4G and 5G Connectivity in Nigeria

Airtel Africa has invested $316.7 million in acquiring 4G and 5G spectrum to boost connectivity in Nigeria. The company was the only one to bid for the 5G license in the second round of bidding.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) confirmed that Airtel applied for the 3.5GHz spectrum, alongside another company, Standard Network and Connections Limited. However, Airtel was the only one to make the required payment.

Airtel secured 100MHz in the 3,500MHz band and two 5MHz blocks in the 2,600MHz band from the NCC. The investment will support the rollout of 5G services and help expand both mobile data and wireless broadband networks in the country.

Airtel Africa’s CEO, Segun Ogunsanya, said Nigeria offers great potential for mobile services growth, and the investment in new technologies and infrastructure is essential for meeting that demand. He emphasized that 5G is a crucial part of their strategy and will help drive digital progress and improve lives across Nigeria.
