Airtel, Glo, and Tier 2 Operators to Compete for 5G Spectrum Licenses

Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and Tier 2 telecommunications providers are set to compete for two available slots in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band for the deployment of 5G mobile technology in Nigeria. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set a reserve price of $273 million for each slot, with the auction slated to take place soon.

The two successful bidders will join MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications, who secured 5G licenses in the first auction in December 2021. The new auction will offer two remaining 100 MHz lots to further support the rollout of 5G in the country.

The NCC’s information memorandum, signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, outlines the auction process and the terms for the ten-year licenses. The auction represents a significant step in advancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure as it seeks to expand 5G network coverage nationwide.
