Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed reports alleging that he distributed dollars to fellow senators before approving the state of emergency in Rivers State.
In a statement on Saturday, his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, refuted claims that money was shared during an Iftar gathering hosted by Akpabio. He clarified that he never issued any press release suggesting such an event took place.
Eyiboh acknowledged that a journalist had asked him about the rumor, and he confirmed the Iftar meeting but denied any financial transactions. “The Senate President has always hosted his colleagues of both religious faiths during spiritual seasons, but no money was ever shared,” he stated.
He described the allegations as baseless, emphasizing that no funds, in any currency, were distributed. “This is nothing more than a fabricated rumor spread by those engaged in blackmail and smear campaigns,” Eyiboh added.
The controversy follows heightened political tensions surrounding the emergency rule in Rivers State, with critics questioning the Senate’s swift approval of President Bola Tinubu’s decision.
Despite the allegations, Akpabio’s camp remains firm, insisting that the claims are part of a broader attempt to tarnish his reputation.
