APC’s Ajibola Basiru Rejects Leadership Award

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has turned down an Award of Excellence in Leadership from the Osun State chapter of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), citing political interference from the Osun State Government.

In a letter dated April 8, 2025, Basiru expressed disappointment over what he described as the “unprofessional” handling of the award process and the abrupt cancellation of the initial ceremony. He criticized the NES’s postponement letter, calling it “hastily prepared” and lacking clarity, which he believes signals external meddling.

According to credible sources within the NES, Basiru claimed that the cancellation was politically motivated, allegedly orchestrated by Governor Ademola Adeleke. He accused the governor of pressuring NES leadership to withdraw the honor due to partisan reasons.

“The real reason for this shameful retreat is the undue pressure and shenanigans exerted by the Governor of Osun State, Mr. Ademola Adeleke,” Basiru wrote, alleging that the governor was replacing merit-based recognition with mediocrity and politics.

Basiru revealed that he was initially hesitant to accept the award but was persuaded by colleagues and friends who believed it was a well-earned acknowledgment of his contributions. However, following the controversial cancellation, he now considers the NES decision a betrayal of its values.

The APC National Secretary called on NES in Osun State to maintain its independence from partisan influences and uphold the principles of excellence, fairness, and merit. “Merit should not be subverted by the whims of those in power,” he stated.
