Residents of Agboriko Orokam in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State have once again appealed to the state government and security agencies to tackle the resurgence of kidnapping in their community. They also called on influential indigenes to help restore peace.
The community, located along the Makurdi-Enugu highway, shares boundaries with Enugu and Kogi states. Due to its strategic position, it has become a hotspot for criminal activities, with kidnappers targeting both residents and travelers.
National President of the Agboriko Development Association, Mr. Godwin Elaigwu Abakpa, expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation. “Kidnappers have been terrorizing our area, tormenting residents and travelers at will,” he stated. He warned that the unchecked violence could severely disrupt movement along the highway and harm national economic development.
Abakpa pointed out that key locations such as Adum-Oko Hill, bad portions of the expressway to Obollo Afor in Enugu State, and Oleche Adupi have become danger zones. He lamented the withdrawal of soldiers who had previously patrolled the area, saying their absence had emboldened criminals. “Whoever took them away should please bring them back. We are suffering,” he pleaded.
The kidnappers have reportedly attacked villages, killed livestock, and abducted several individuals, including Omale Achagba, for whom a ransom was paid. “Our people are now afraid to return to the village. The government must act now,” Abakpa urged.
To combat the crisis, the association is strengthening ties with traditional leaders and stakeholders to restore order. They are calling on all well-meaning individuals to join efforts in ensuring the safety of Agboriko and its people.
