Benue Governor Bans Court Protests

Benue Governor Bans Court Protests

Hyacinth Alia, has placed a ban on all protests and public activities within and around court premises in the state until further notice. The governor warned that anyone caught violating the directive would face legal action.

The announcement came through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, who emphasized that the only exception to the ban would be the ongoing local election petition tribunal sittings. According to the governor, these sessions are time-sensitive and critical.

Governor Alia pointed out that courts in Benue State have remained shut since December 6, 2024, due to the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) strike. This prolonged closure has added to the tensions surrounding legal proceedings in the state.

He made it clear that all individuals, groups, and organizations must immediately stop any form of gathering, protest, or event near court premises until the government issues further directives.

The governor’s order is seen as a move to prevent potential disruptions or politically motivated protests around the tribunal proceedings, which have already drawn heightened attention.

While some residents view the ban as necessary to maintain order, others fear it could be used to silence dissenting voices, especially in the wake of recent political controversies in the state.
