Benue State Receives Torch of Unity for National Sports Festival

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Barrister Sam Ode, received the Torch of Unity for the 22nd National Sports Festival, set to take place in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30, 2025.

The torch, presented by Ikana Mbora of the National Sports Commission, serves as a formal invitation for Benue State to participate in the festival. Deputy Governor Ode described the torch as a symbol of unity, emphasizing the festival’s role in fostering national cohesion.

He praised Governor Alia’s commitment to sports development, highlighting major investments in infrastructure and football, aimed at empowering youth and reducing crime. Ode called on investors to support Benue’s sports sector, noting plans to expand into volleyball, handball, and table tennis to discover new talent.

The Deputy Governor also acknowledged the Lobi Stars Football Club, led by Chairman Dr. Philip Nongo, for their resilience in playing outside their home state. He reassured them that McCarthy Stadium would soon be ready for home matches.

Additionally, he commended the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for their contributions to sports promotion and promised full government support for their representation at Ogun 2025.

Ikana Mbora reiterated that the Torch of Unity symbolizes the spirit of unity, peace, and sporting excellence. She assured that the National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games”, would be a thrilling event, showcasing top talents in football, handball, volleyball, basketball, and more.
