Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists abducted Professor Abubakar Eljuma and several passengers along the Damaturu-Biu Road in Borno State on Sunday.
The attack took place near Kamuya village, a location notorious for similar incidents over the years. Professor Eljuma, a senior academic at the Nigeria Army University Biu (NAUB), was reportedly traveling in a commercial vehicle when the gunmen struck.
Sources confirmed that Professor Eljuma, who serves as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering, is also a prominent contender for the Vice-Chancellor position at NAUB.
Kamuya, just 10 kilometers from Buratai—the hometown of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai (Rtd)—has long been a hotspot for terrorist ambushes, roadside bombs, and kidnappings.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the terrorists blocked the highway, forced vehicles to stop, and whisked away selected passengers, including the professor.
Security forces have since launched a search and rescue operation, but the incident once again highlights the persistent insecurity along the Damaturu-Biu corridor.
