A former Nigerien soldier who joined the terrorist group Boko Haram has surrendered to authorities in Kindjandi, Diffa Region, military sources confirmed.
Abba Ibrahim, who deserted the Nigerien Armed Forces on March 8, 2025, alongside another soldier, Bandam Dala, turned himself in on April 21 while armed and riding horseback. He was accompanied by an unidentified youth, whose identity is under investigation.
Ibrahim is currently being interrogated by military intelligence. Officials say the surrender is a potential breakthrough in efforts to curb insurgency in the volatile Lake Chad region.
The Diffa Region remains a hotspot for Boko Haram activities due to its strategic location near Nigeria and the Lake Chad basin. Boko Haram is officially designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and several African governments.
