Panic gripped the town of Buni Yadi in Yobe State as suspected Boko Haram fighters launched a late-night assault on a military base in Gujba Local Government Area. The attack reportedly occurred around 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, catching residents off guard and triggering a fierce response from Nigerian troops.
Local sources told LEADERSHIP that both soldiers and terrorists were killed in the gun battle, although exact numbers remain unclear. A resident of the town, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying, “I can confirm that there was an attack and soldiers were killed.”
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunshots rang through the town and soldiers scrambled to reinforce their positions. “The attackers came in large numbers, shooting sporadically before heading for the military base,” another source revealed.
A village elder, who also declined to be named, said the situation has now calmed down. “Normalcy has returned. People have resumed their daily activities,” he said, trying to reassure worried locals.
A military source confirmed the clash but didn’t give a death toll. “There was a serious attack on one of our bases. Our troops responded and killed many insurgents. We also recovered two vehicles and weapons,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, residents who had fled to nearby bushes are now making their way back into the town. “I wasn’t around when it happened, but I’m on my way back now. My friends told me it’s safe again,” said a returning resident.
