Citizens Watch Africa Commends NCC Boss Aminu Maida for Revamping Telecom Sector

Citizens Watch Africa (CWA) has praised Dr. Aminu Maida for his efforts in improving Nigeria’s telecommunications sector since he became the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). During a press conference on Tuesday, the group highlighted Maida’s reforms, which have boosted confidence among stakeholders and attracted more investments in the telecom industry.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Pastor Dave Ogbole, the group’s convener, said their commendation was based on a thorough review of the NCC’s activities over the past six months. He noted that the leadership under Dr. Maida has focused on transparency, accountability, and creating equal opportunities for all players in the sector.

Ogbole stated that the NCC’s renewed focus has led to steady progress, including more active voice and internet subscriptions. He noted that while teledensity dropped from 115.63% to 102.30% in September 2023 and broadband penetration decreased from 45.47% to 40.85%, there was still growth in active voice subscriptions, which increased from 220.7 million to 221.7 million. Internet subscriptions also rose from 159 million in August to 160.1 million in September.

“These numbers show that the NCC is on the right path under Dr. Maida’s leadership,” Ogbole said. “He has brought policies that are revitalizing the sector and making it more productive.”

CWA commended Dr. Maida for his dedication to improving the industry and urged him to continue his efforts to ensure sustainable growth and development in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. They described his leadership as focused and passionate, with a clear commitment to driving progress in the industry.
