Credible Journalism: A Cornerstone for Credible Elections – Danbatta

As Nigeria braces for the 2023 general elections, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has underscored the crucial role the media plays in ensuring the credibility of elections. Speaking at the 18th All-Nigeria Editors Conference in Owerri, Imo State, Danbatta highlighted how journalism could influence the political landscape, emphasizing that a responsible and vibrant media could drive the nation towards a more transparent and democratic electoral process.

In his address to the gathering of esteemed Nigerian editors, which included the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Danbatta reiterated the immense responsibility journalists bear in shaping public perception and guiding the electoral process. The conference theme, “2023: Political Landscape, Credible Elections and the Role of the Editors,” set the stage for a candid discussion about the media’s vital role before, during, and after elections.

Danbatta, whose goodwill message was delivered by the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Reuben Muoka, praised the media’s historic contributions, particularly its critical role in Nigeria’s fight for political independence. He expressed confidence that, as in the past, the Nigerian media would rise to the occasion, ensuring that the public remains well-informed and that elections are fair, free, and credible.

“The media is not just a conveyor of information,” Danbatta declared, “but a watchdog for democracy, ensuring public officials stay true to the social contract.” He stressed that good journalism is fundamental to sustaining a democratic culture, with successful elections playing a key role in political stability.

As the conference set its sights on formulating resolutions that would guide journalists’ coverage of the upcoming elections, Danbatta emphasized the importance of objective, balanced, and fair reporting. The role of editors, he said, is pivotal in shaping the media’s approach to election coverage, setting parameters that uphold the integrity of the democratic process.

Danbatta also highlighted the NCC’s ongoing commitment to improving telecommunications infrastructure, including the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, as part of the broader effort to enhance connectivity and social cohesion. He noted that access to reliable telecommunications services is vital for the smooth conduct of elections, as they ensure timely and accurate communication between stakeholders.

Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian media for their support in advancing the NCC’s mandate, Danbatta acknowledged the partnership’s success in raising public awareness of the Commission’s activities and achievements. He particularly commended the media’s coverage of key initiatives, such as consumer protection, infrastructure development, and the launch of the Fifth Generation (5G) networks, which have played a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.

As Nigeria approaches the 2023 elections, Danbatta’s message to the media is clear: responsible, credible journalism is not just a pillar of democracy; it is the bedrock upon which credible elections are built. The media’s ability to inform, educate, and hold public officials accountable will be critical in shaping the future of Nigeria’s democratic process.
