A civil society organization, the Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risk Reduction (NAPPDRR), has raised concerns over gas flaring and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. The group warned that carbon pollution continues to endanger the region’s population.
The Executive Director of NAPPDRR, Hon. Emem Edoho, accused Splat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (SEPNU) of being the major offender. He stated that the company, which took over the assets of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited, has continued the harmful practice of gas flaring in Akwa Ibom’s Ibeno local government area.
Edoho revealed that NAPPDRR’s undercover investigation confirmed ongoing flaring. He also noted that letters requesting information under the Freedom of Information Act were sent to SEPNU, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the oil spill detection agency NOSDRIA, but no response was received.
The activist lamented the severe consequences of gas flaring, citing a $1.9 billion revenue loss between 2020 and 2024. He urged federal and state governments to enforce stricter regulations to curb the environmental damage.
Edoho also referenced Nigeria’s Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (GFCP), which aims to eliminate routine flaring by 2030. However, he warned that this goal would remain unattainable unless authorities take immediate action against polluters.
Meanwhile, SEPLAT Energy’s General Manager for Public and Government Affairs, Mr. Ogechukwu Udeagha, reassured stakeholders that the company is committed to responsible oil exploration in line with global best practices.
