The Good Governance Advocates (GGA) has praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy, driving innovation, and reducing the digital gap.
The group also acknowledged the work of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and Dr. Aminu Maida for supporting the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda by building a strong digital ecosystem, empowering entrepreneurs, and creating job opportunities for young Nigerians.
The GGA also highlighted the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) under Dr. Maida’s leadership for its role in improving the telecommunications industry.
This recognition was shared during a press conference held on Thursday to review President Tinubu’s first year in office.
Speaking at the event, Comrade Mahmoud Abubakar, the GGA convener, praised the Ministry for its growth and transformation, noting that it has remained committed to using technology to boost economic progress.
Abubakar further commended Dr. Maida for his efforts in creating an environment that fosters innovation and competition, helping Nigeria’s economy grow.
“The Good Governance Advocates agree with the Minister that digital literacy is not just about becoming a technical expert, but about providing a foundation for participating in the digital economy,” Abubakar said.
He also pointed out that digital literacy helps people protect their personal information online and avoid cyber threats. It also teaches them how to use social media safely and recognize risks like cyberbullying, identity theft, and phishing.
Abubakar emphasized the importance of the federal government’s goal of ensuring 90% of Nigerians are digitally literate by 2030, which aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The GGA also praised the NCC for its role in improving Nigeria’s telecom sector and encouraging both local and foreign investments in the industry. The NCC has been working to ensure that Nigerians are involved in the ownership and management of telecom companies and the development of communication technologies.
Another significant achievement mentioned was the opening of the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub (Nigeria Startup House) in San Francisco, USA. This initiative is expected to help boost Nigeria’s startup ecosystem, attract investment, and improve the country’s presence in the global technology scene.
Abubakar also highlighted the importance of a new project to lay 90,000km of fiber-optic cables across Nigeria. This will improve internet access nationwide and complement existing infrastructure.
Lastly, the GGA recognized the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, aimed at producing skilled workers in fields like software development, data science, cybersecurity, and more. The program is a key part of President Tinubu’s goal to create 2 million digital jobs by 2025.
“This program is a game-changer for Nigeria’s future,” Abubakar concluded.
