The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called on the United Kingdom to support Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
Speaking in London during the “UK-Nigeria Collaboration: A Parliamentary Strategic Dialogue,” Kalu emphasized the need for both nations to work together in tackling corruption and strengthening economic and diplomatic ties. The event was attended by UK and Nigerian lawmakers, including the Deputy Leader of the British House of Lords, Rt. Hon. Lord Collins.
Kalu highlighted the long-standing partnership between Nigeria and the UK and stressed that deeper collaboration could unlock opportunities for mutual growth. He urged the UK government to ease the process of returning funds stolen by corrupt Nigerian officials and currently held in UK financial institutions.
“The UK and Nigeria have shared values and objectives. We need stronger collaboration to recover illicit funds, combat corruption, and establish mechanisms to prevent financial crimes,” he said.
Kalu also called for UK support in improving Nigeria’s constitutional framework, especially in areas like gender inclusion and security reforms. He appealed to the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to provide technical assistance and expertise for Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional review, which aims to create a more inclusive and secure nation.
The Deputy Speaker concluded by reaffirming the importance of the UK-Nigeria partnership in addressing shared challenges and achieving sustainable development.
