Ebonyi State Government and PDP Chieftain Clash Over Alleged Double Taxation

Mazi Moses Idika, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have disagreed over allegations of double taxation and economic hardship in the state.

Recently, tricycle operators, commercial motorcyclists, and truck drivers at the Abakaliki Timber Market have staged protests, accusing the State Revenue Board and its agents of imposing excessive levies.

PDP Chieftain’s Accusations

Mazi Idika expressed concern, stating:

“Even with the pervasive poverty in the state, various toll collections have become a major income source for government allies. The administration should first create an enabling environment for small businesses before imposing multiple, unaccounted taxes.”

He urged the Hon. Ogbonna Nwifuru-led government to focus on industrial development, investment incentives, and business-friendly policies to encourage sustainable economic growth.

Government’s Response

The State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr. Jude Okpor, dismissed the allegations as false and politically motivated.

“There is nothing like double taxation in Ebonyi. The government is actually reducing tax burdens, particularly on low-income earners, and ensuring a favorable business environment.”

Mr. Okpor attributed the recent Timber Market protest to an internal dispute between truck drivers, timber dealers, and the market’s management, rather than government taxation policies.

He reiterated the state’s commitment to increasing internally generated revenue (IGR) responsibly, without burdening ordinary citizens.
