Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, challenging the legality of his removal from office.
Obasa filed a suit at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his dismissal was unlawful as it occurred while the Assembly was on recess. The case has yet to be assigned to a judge.
According to his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country. He claims the process violated due process and his rights as Speaker.
The embattled lawmaker is asking the court to declare his removal invalid and reinstate him, citing procedural irregularities in the decision made by his colleagues.
He is also seeking an accelerated hearing of the case and has requested the court to reduce the time allowed for the defendants to respond to seven days after the hearing begins.
The legal battle now puts the Lagos State Assembly in a tense situation, as Obasa fights to reclaim his leadership position amid shifting political dynamics.
