Experts to Discuss Satellite Broadband’s Impact on Nigeria’s Internet

Telecom experts will meet at the Telecom Sector Sustainability Forum (TSSF) to discuss how satellite broadband could disrupt Nigeria’s internet space.

The event, organized by Business Remarks, will take place on February 28, 2023, in Lagos. It will feature key players in Nigeria’s telecom industry, including Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Network Operators, and telecom infrastructure companies.

According to Bukola Olanrewaju, Managing Editor of Business Remarks and convener of the forum, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will address key issues related to satellite broadband and its impact on the telecom sector. The forum will focus on how satellite internet could affect the country’s economy and the sustainability of telecom companies.

With internet access becoming a daily necessity, the demand for reliable and fast internet connections is growing. This has made competition in the sector more intense. Olanrewaju highlighted that while Nigeria is Africa’s fastest-growing telecom market, broadband penetration stood at 47.4% in December 2022, far from the 70% target set for 2025. There are also 114 areas still lacking sufficient internet access.

The introduction of satellite internet, especially Elon Musk’s Starlink, has stirred up reactions. Many industry experts believe it could cause significant changes in Nigeria’s telecom market, particularly in rural and underserved regions where satellite internet could offer much-needed connectivity.
