FCTA Crushes 601 Motorcycles in Abuja Over Security, Traffic Violations

In a sweeping crackdown on illegal motorcycle operations, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Tuesday destroyed 601 impounded motorbikes in Abuja. The move, authorities say, is part of a broader effort to enforce traffic laws and address rising security concerns.

Speaking during the exercise, Mandate Secretary for Transport, Dr. Elechi Chinedum, said the destruction was carried out by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in line with regulations banning motorcycles in specific parts of the capital. The rule, effective since January 1, 2023, was signed by former Minister Mohammed Bello.

“This isn’t just about the aesthetics of the city anymore—it’s about safety,” Chinedum said. “Motorcycles have been linked to security breaches, and we must act. If you’re caught in a restricted area, your bike will be seized. We are not going to relent.”

The director of DRTS, Dr. Abdulateef Bello, echoed this stance, noting that the ban on commercial motorcycles dates back to 2006. “This is a long-standing regulation, and we are sending a strong message today: don’t invest in this business if you plan to operate within restricted zones,” he stated.

Also present was the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, FCT Command, Mode Magawata, who warned that motorcycles are frequently used in crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnappings. “The public must understand that enforcing this ban is not optional—it’s essential to maintaining order and safety in Abuja,” he said.

Officials assured residents that enforcement will continue and that future violators will face similar consequences. The operation underscores a renewed commitment to upholding law and order in the capital city.
