The Nigerian government has ordered telecom operators to reverse a 10% upward tariff adjustment on some voice and data services, following concerns over the potential hardship it could impose on Nigerians.
In a statement issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the commission clarified that the tariff increase had been provisionally approved but had not received final approval from the NCC’s Board. As a result, the commission directed mobile network operators (MNOs) to undo the increase and conduct further consultations with industry stakeholders to determine the best approach to balancing the interests of both consumers and service providers.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, emphasized that protecting citizens from additional financial burdens during this critical period is a priority. Pantami had previously secured President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval to suspend a proposed 5% excise duty on telecom services to support operators while safeguarding consumers.
