FG Blames Telecom Tariff Hike on Global Inflation, Operating Costs

The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has explained that the recent increase in telecom tariffs by mobile network operators (MNOs) is a result of global inflation and rising operational costs. He made this statement while addressing journalists after a closed-door budget defense session with the National Assembly’s joint committee on Information, Communication, and Technology.

Tijani highlighted that telecom operators have been facing high operating costs and global inflation for several years, which have made it difficult for them to maintain their services at current prices.

“The price hike is a result of global inflation,” Tijani said. “The telecom sector has not raised its prices for a long time, and the government has been doing its best to manage the situation. The operators have been struggling with rising diesel costs, which is not a unique issue to Nigeria.”

The minister also reassured Nigerians that the government is focused on ensuring the sustainability of the telecom sector and protecting citizens’ interests. He added that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is actively monitoring the quality of services to ensure that consumers receive the best possible service despite the price adjustments.
