The Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability has criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for declaring businesswoman and philanthropist Mrs. Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu wanted, despite her prior communication with the agency regarding her absence due to medical reasons.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the group condemned what it described as “desperate measures” by the EFCC against Achimugu and her family. The coalition’s National Public Relations Officer, Adeniran Taiwo Olugbenga, called on the agency to uphold the rule of law and respect fundamental rights.

Olugbenga revealed that Mrs. Achimugu had informed the EFCC’s Port Harcourt zonal office about her medical trip on March 5, 2025, just a day after receiving an invitation for questioning. She reportedly sent follow-up letters, including one directly to the EFCC Chairman, which was acknowledged. However, despite this, the EFCC declared her wanted on March 15, 2025.

The coalition further alleged that EFCC operatives unlawfully raided Achimugu’s Abuja residence at night, violating the commission’s own pledge to end such operations. During the raid, her family members, domestic staff, and even her 80-year-old mother were allegedly harassed without a valid court warrant.

The group accused the EFCC of conducting a media trial against Achimugu and suggested that political motives could be behind the agency’s actions. They emphasized that she has a clean record and a strong reputation as a business leader contributing to national development.

Calling for fairness and due process, the coalition urged the EFCC to reconsider its approach, warning that such aggressive tactics could harm Nigeria’s investment climate and undermine confidence in the agency’s anti-corruption mandate.
