Flying Eagles Land in ‘Group of Death’ for U20 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles face a tough challenge at the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after being drawn into Group B alongside Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco. The tournament will take place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 11.

The draw, held on Thursday in Cairo, has placed Nigeria in what many consider the tournament’s most competitive group, featuring three former champions. With their rich history in the competition, the seven-time champions must navigate a difficult path to advance.

Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in the group stage of the previous edition and will need another strong performance to kick off their campaign with confidence. The Flying Eagles secured a third-place finish in Egypt two years ago and will be aiming for an even better result this time.

Speaking at the draw, former Malian international Adama Coulibaly acknowledged the difficulty of Group B. “There is no doubt that the toughest group is Group B, with Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco,” he said.

The Flying Eagles will have to be at their best from the start, as any slip-up could prove costly in such a competitive group. The tournament is expected to showcase some of Africa’s best young talents, with high-stakes matches from the opening round.

As Nigeria prepares for the competition, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the team handles this major test on the road to U20 AFCON glory.
