Students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) took to the streets on Wednesday to protest what they described as a deliberate attempt by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) National Women’s Committee to destabilise the institution.
Led by the Students’ Union Government (SUG), the students marched across the Oye-Ekiti campus, expressing outrage over the committee’s call for the suspension of FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina.
The protest was sparked by a recent press conference held by the SSANU Women’s Committee in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, where the group demanded Fasina’s suspension over allegations of sexual harassment made by a staff member, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo.
Describing the allegation as politically motivated, the students accused the committee, led by Mrs. Ijeoma Kalu, of spreading falsehood and attempting to smear the university’s leadership.
FUOYE Students’ Union Vice-President, Comrade Olaniyan Eniola, condemned the committee’s actions, saying:
“We are appalled by the disgraceful conduct of the SSANU National Women’s Committee, which is demanding the suspension of our respected Vice-Chancellor based on unfounded allegations. It’s disappointing that a body meant to uphold truth and integrity is instead engaging in media blackmail.”
The students warned the committee against making inflammatory statements capable of disrupting the university’s peace and academic calendar, vowing to resist any attempt to derail their academic progress.
