Governors Demand Bigger Role in Constitution Review

State governors have called for greater involvement in Nigeria’s constitutional review, stressing the need to ensure subnational perspectives are fully represented.

The resolution was made during the 11th meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) on Wednesday, where governors met with the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (COSLON) to discuss governance reforms and legislative collaboration.

With the 10th National Assembly currently amending the Nigerian Constitution, the governors emphasized that state-level priorities must not be overlooked.

Key concerns raised include fiscal federalism, resource control, and governance efficiency, which they argue are critical for balancing power between the federal and state governments.

The governors stressed that constitutional amendments should strengthen the autonomy of states, ensuring a more equitable distribution of resources and responsibilities.

The forum reaffirmed its commitment to working with lawmakers to ensure the review process reflects the interests of all Nigerians, not just the federal government.
