Grassroots Sports Development Takes Centre Stage at Niger Delta Sports Festival

Uyo, Akwa Ibom – A new approach to grassroots sports development is being implemented at the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF), where athletes discovered during the event will undergo periodic training camps with a focus on scientific training methods.

Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Co-Chairman of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the festival, shared this during a media briefing, revealing that 64 athletes had already been identified by Day 4 of the festival.

“This festival is not just about who finishes first or wins gold. Our scouts are looking for signs of potential—qualities that can be nurtured for future success,” Ikpokpo explained.

He further emphasized that the athletes, many of whom did not place in top positions, will benefit from scientifically-informed training led by certified coaches. Ikpokpo, who is also the project’s lead consultant, stressed that the true work begins after the festival, as plans are made to support and develop the discovered talents.

Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the festival has seen 3,000 athletes and 500 officials competing in 17 sports since its commencement on April 1, with the event set to conclude on April 8 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
