Harvard Risks Ban on Foreign Students

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned Harvard University that it could lose its ability to enroll foreign students unless it complies with new federal demands from the Trump administration. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued the warning on Wednesday, insisting Harvard turn over records tied to certain visa holders.

In addition to the threat, Noem announced the cancellation of two DHS grants to Harvard totaling over $2.7 million. She said she sent a letter demanding information on what she described as “illegal and violent activities” involving foreign students. The deadline for compliance is April 30.

“And if Harvard cannot verify it is in full compliance with its reporting requirements, the university will lose the privilege of enrolling foreign students,” Noem said in a statement.

A Harvard spokesperson responded by acknowledging the letter and grant termination, adding that the university stands by its prior statement. “Harvard will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights,” the spokesperson said, while affirming the school would comply with the law.

This comes amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to clamp down on pro-Palestinian campus protests. The administration has tied the protests to foreign interference, antisemitism, and support for Hamas—labeling some demonstrators as national security threats. Hundreds of visas have reportedly been revoked as part of the crackdown.

Noem accused Harvard of harboring what she called “anti-American, pro-Hamas ideology.” She added, “With a $53.2 billion endowment, Harvard can fund its own chaos – DHS won’t.
