House of Reps Advances Bill to Formalise Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education

The House of Representatives has taken a crucial step toward officially recognising Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Imo State, as a fully established federal institution.

On Thursday, lawmakers passed a bill through its second reading to provide statutory backing for the university’s operations.

Sponsored by Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere (Ideato North/South Federal Constituency), the bill was presented by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere.

The legislation aims to:
✔️ Establish a clear legal and administrative framework for the university.
✔️ Strengthen governance and enhance teacher training.
✔️ Promote research and innovation in education.
✔️ Improve access to higher education, particularly for underrepresented groups.
✔️ Align the university’s curriculum with global best practices.

Lawmakers stressed that once enacted, the law will enable students to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, expanding academic opportunities in education.

The bill received overwhelming support during a voice vote presided over by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu. It will now proceed to the next legislative stage, moving closer to full passage into law.
