Huawei Wins 2023 Data Privacy Award

Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited has been named the winner of the 2023 Data Privacy Award by the Nigerian Data Protection Bureau (NDPB). The company was recognized for its proactive efforts in creating awareness and building capacity around data privacy and protection, as well as its dedication to keeping customer data secure.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) were also honored with the “Pillar of Support” award for their contributions to advancing data protection in Nigeria.

During the event, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, highlighted the NDPB’s mission to promote compliance with data protection laws rather than focusing solely on penalties. He called on businesses and government agencies to prioritize the privacy of their stakeholders’ data and support the Nigerian Data Protection Bill and related policies.

Reacting to the award, Huawei Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Osita Iweze, expressed gratitude, saying, “We are deeply honored by this recognition. For us, data privacy is not just a legal requirement but a moral duty. We will continue to protect our customers’ data and work to maintain their trust.”

The NDPB’s CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, praised Huawei for its strong commitment to implementing top-tier security measures and providing critical support to the Bureau since its establishment in February 2022. He also acknowledged the company’s contributions to ensuring smooth operations and advancing data protection standards in Nigeria.

The event was part of the Nigerian National Privacy Week 2023, led by the NDPB to raise awareness about data protection. Celebrated annually on January 28, World Privacy Day serves as a global reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal information.

In a goodwill message, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Chief Osita Okechukwu, commended the NDPB for its impressive achievements within its first year. “The digital world is here to stay, and trust is the foundation of any successful digital economy,” he stated.

The Privacy Week event attracted over 500 stakeholders from various industries, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to data protection and privacy in an increasingly digital world.
