The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC) for the timely release of the voters’ register ahead of the August 9, 2025, local government elections in Rivers State.
In a statement, HURIWA National Coordinator Comrade Emma Onwubiko described the move as a vital step toward ensuring a credible electoral process. “This swift action by the electoral bodies, in line with the Electoral Act, has set a foundation for credible elections,” the group stated.
The release followed a formal request from RISIEC in a letter dated March 3, 2025, signed by its chairman, Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli. INEC approved the request through a response on March 13, signed by its Secretary, Rose Oriaran, instructing RISIEC to collect the soft copy of the voters’ register and an updated list of registered political parties.
HURIWA commended the decision and urged all stakeholders, including political actors, civil society groups, and election observers, to prepare for a free, fair, and peaceful election. “For credible elections, INEC must take key decisions and actions that pave the way for an inclusive and transparent process,” the group emphasized.
The group also called on political parties to conduct fair campaigns and ensure candidates adhere to electoral laws. “We urge all stakeholders to put all hands on deck and get ready for the elections,” the statement added.
HURIWA further stressed the need for civil society organizations and the media to act as watchdogs throughout the electoral process. “While we do our part, we particularly urge civil society groups to prepare and act as observer watchdogs of the process,” the group concluded.
