Ibeno Group Raises Alarm Over Plot to Sabotage Oil Production in Akwa Ibom

The Ulok Ulok Progressives Assembly (UUPA), a socio-cultural group representing the Ibeno ethnic nationality in Akwa Ibom State, has warned of an alleged plot by the Eket People’s Union and Esit Eket Local Government Area to incite violence and disrupt federal government efforts to boost crude oil production in the region.

The tension stems from a dispute over the ownership of Stubb Creek Forest in Ibeno LGA, which has been acquired by BUA Group for a refinery project and Landmark Beach Resort. The UUPA leaders, during an emergency meeting in Ukpenkang, Ibeno LGA, expressed concerns over a recent “quit notice” issued to Ibeno people, urging them to vacate their territory.

The group clarified that the notice is not just aimed at Ibeno, a legally recognized local government area, but also at scaring away existing and potential investors attracted to the region due to its rich oil, gas, and natural resources.

The UUPA warned that such actions could destabilize the peace enjoyed by residents and investors in the state, calling for immediate intervention to prevent violence and ensure the continued development of the area.
