ILEAD Calls for Action Against Child Drug Abuse

A Chicago-based nonprofit, the Institute for Leadership Education for African Democracy (ILEAD), has urged urgent action to tackle drug abuse among schoolchildren. The group stressed the need for education and awareness to combat the growing crisis.

Speaking to journalists, ILEAD co-founder and legal researcher Barrister Tolulope Oneya described drug abuse as a “pandemic” that must be addressed immediately. She identified peer pressure, curiosity, and a lack of awareness about the dangers of drug use as key contributors to the problem.

“One of the most effective solutions is education and reorientation,” Oneya stated. “Children need to understand the consequences of drug abuse on their health, future, and society.”

As part of its efforts, ILEAD has launched an essay competition in collaboration with Relief for Women and Children Initiative and Mudhouse Realtors Ltd. The contest, which coincides with this year’s Children’s Day celebrations, will encourage students to explore the impact of drug abuse and propose solutions. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three participants.

Oneya announced that the competition will become an annual event, covering critical topics like climate change, artificial intelligence, social justice, and global health. “Each year, we will focus on pressing issues affecting children worldwide,” she added.

She emphasized that parents play a crucial role in preventing drug abuse. “Parents must be present, initiate conversations, and instill strong values to protect their children from harmful influences,” she advised. She also urged children to resist peer pressure, warning that the effects of drug use can be irreversible.
