IMF Appoints Tony Elumelu to Global Advisory Council

Tony Elumelu, to its Advisory Council on Entrepreneurship and Growth. The announcement was made on Friday.

Elumelu, a renowned advocate for African entrepreneurship, has mentored and funded over 25,000 entrepreneurs through the Tony Elumelu Foundation since 2015. The statement praised his role in driving Africa’s economic transformation through Africapitalism—a philosophy emphasizing private-sector-led development.

“Elumelu will be instrumental in ensuring that Africa’s entrepreneurial potential is central to global economic policymaking,” the IMF noted.

The Advisory Council, convened by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, includes top global leaders such as Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, and Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle.

At the inaugural meeting on March 26, 2025, Georgieva stated, “The Council brings together leading thinkers to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth.”

Elumelu’s inclusion highlights Africa’s increasing influence in shaping global economic policies, particularly in private-sector-driven development.
