Kaduna Hosts Sports Event for Peace and Unity

The Kaduna State Peace Commission (KSPC), in partnership with Deutsche Zusammenarbeit (German Cooperation), organized a sports competition over the weekend to promote peace and unity in Kaduna.

Themed “Leveling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion,” the event brought together persons with disabilities (PWDs), women’s organizations, religious leaders, and youth groups, all united in the spirit of peacebuilding. The Kaduna State Commissioner for Sports Development, Prof. Benjamin Gugong, praised the initiative and commended its inclusivity.

Gugong emphasized that Governor Uba Sani remains committed to peaceful coexistence in the state, stating that any project related to peace and unity must be reported to him for further support. “You can see that everyone is enjoying relative peace today compared to years ago when such gatherings were impossible,” he noted.

Barr. Rebecca Sako-John, a permanent commissioner with the KSPC, highlighted the significance of sports as a tool for fostering peace and social inclusion. She stressed that development thrives only in a peaceful environment, drawing a connection between sports, unity, and national progress.

Myriam Wedroago, Head of the PEACECORE Project, underscored the power of sports in strengthening social cohesion. “Today’s event is a testament to our shared commitment to peacebuilding and community resilience. Every sport, every competition, is an opportunity to reinforce the call for peace and unity,” she said.

Among the participating teams were Zaman Lafiya Amputee Club, Munatare Amputee Club, Women in Peace Football Club, Women in Conflict Management Football Club, and Ikon Allah Football Club, all demonstrating the role of sports in fostering reconciliation and inclusion.
