Kogi Senator Faces Recall Battle

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has begun in Kogi Central, sparking mixed reactions among constituents. While some argue she has failed in her duties, others dismiss the move as politically motivated and bound to fail.

The two-day exercise is taking place across the five local government areas of the district. On the first day, polling units in Okehi, Okene, Ajaokuta, and Ogori/Magongo saw varied turnouts, with large participation in some areas and minimal interest in others. The process continues in Adavi LGA today.

Supporters of the recall cite concerns over poverty, poor infrastructure, and lack of effective representation. A constituent who spoke anonymously claimed, “This is beyond politics. People are unhappy with her leadership and want a change.” However, others argue that gathering enough signatures for her removal is unlikely.

Nura Ibrahim from Okene expressed doubt about the recall’s success, while APC member Abbas Aliyu from Okehi called it a waste of time. “This happened before with Senator Dino Melaye, and it failed. The same will happen again,” he stated.

Some residents believe the recall is politically motivated. Amina Muhammed, a woman leader from Ajaokuta, questioned the timing. “She was just empowering women and youths a few months ago. What has changed?” she asked.

A pro-Akpoti-Uduaghan group, Good People of Kogi Central, has warned residents not to provide their voter details, calling the recall a ploy. PDP chieftain Abdulrahman Badamasuiy urged voters to resist pressure, saying, “Do not sign anything. This is all politics.”
