Kwara Trains 25 Doctors to Save Mothers

The Kwara State government has launched a special training program for 25 medical personnel to improve emergency obstetric and newborn care, aiming to enhance maternal and child safety during childbirth.

The 14-day training, held in Ilorin, is part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality rates in the state. Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina El-Imam, emphasized that the program is designed to equip frontline healthcare workers with advanced obstetric skills.

“This training will enhance clinical skills, competence, and leadership among healthcare professionals,” she stated. “It’s time to groom leaders who can match their technical expertise with real-world challenges and train others in the field.”

Dr. El-Imam also revealed that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has approved five facilities in Kwara to lead the fight against maternal mortality. These hospitals will now provide free Caesarian sections and other essential maternal healthcare services.

She highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding access to free medical care across the state, ensuring that pregnant women and newborns receive quality treatment without financial burden.

UNICEF representative Dr. Hadiza Aliyu praised the initiative, noting that Kwara’s government has created an enabling environment for development partners to support and improve healthcare services for residents.
