Labour Party Slams NLC Over Leadership Dispute

The Labour Party (LP) has criticized the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for allegedly attempting to undermine the party’s leadership under Chairman Barrister Julius Abure. LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this statement in response to a press conference led by Prof. Theophilus Ndubaku, Chairman of the LP Transition Committee.

Ifoh dismissed the claims made during the press conference, describing them as misleading and an attempt to tarnish Abure’s reputation. He referenced forensic and police reports, which he said cleared Abure and three others of any wrongdoing. According to him, the Attorney General returned the case file to the police after the forensic report proved there was no forgery, making any further accusations baseless.

He also accused Ndubaku and his associates of acting in bad faith, stating that many of them are not even registered members of the Labour Party. “It is laughable that someone is giving an ultimatum to the Attorney General over a case that does not exist,” Ifoh said, adding that the public is already aware of their tactics.

Furthermore, Ifoh argued that the NLC has no legal authority to form a political commission, as confirmed by letters from INEC and the Ministry of Labour. He pointed out that the NLC’s own National Executive Council had already decided to explore alliances with other political parties for the 2027 elections, making Ndubaku’s efforts irrelevant.

The Labour Party spokesperson also accused Ndubaku’s group of exploiting major elections for personal gain. He claimed they fraudulently sold governorship nomination forms to aspirants in Ondo State in 2024, falsely promising them the party’s ticket. He warned that similar activities might occur in Anambra’s upcoming governorship election, urging security agencies to intervene.

Finally, Ifoh accused Ndubaku of illegally using the official Labour Party letterhead for fraudulent activities. He announced plans to formally report the matter to security agencies, stating that lawlessness would not be tolerated in the party.
