As Nigeria’s internet subscriber base continues to grow—reaching 161.68 million in January 2024—the quality of internet services remains a concern. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports that 3G networks account for 9.36% of internet access, 4G covers 31.75%, and 5G serves only 1.11% of internet users.
This combination of network coverage limitations explains Nigeria’s rank of 93rd out of 144 countries in the global mobile internet speed test conducted by Ookla, a U.S.-based internet speed analysis firm. The country’s median internet speed was recorded at 26.74 Mbps in January.
