MainOne Completes Subsea Cable Repairs, Internet Speed Set to Improve

Internet speeds in Nigeria are expected to improve after MainOne finished repairing its undersea cables that caused disruptions for several weeks.

MainOne, now an Equinix company, confirmed that repairs on its submarine cable system, which was damaged on March 14, 2024, have been completed. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had earlier explained that the outage was due to damage to international undersea cables along the West African coast, affecting providers like West African Cable System, African Coast to Europe, SAT3, and MainOne itself.

After eight weeks of work, MainOne’s Managing Director, Funke Opeke, announced that regular service has resumed. During the downtime, MainOne took steps to reduce the impact on its customers by rerouting traffic and providing backup capacity.

Opeke thanked everyone involved for their support during the downtime, including partners, customers, and the team at MainOne. She emphasized that, with help from regional partners and other stakeholders, the company completed the necessary repairs and resumed normal operations.

MainOne’s quick response and hard work to restore service show its commitment to improving internet service and supporting the region’s digital growth.
