Minister Backs Housing Plan for Women

Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has praised a new partnership between the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). The initiative aims to provide housing finance solutions that will help more women become homeowners.

She made this statement on Tuesday when the Managing Director of FMBN, Mr. Shehu Usman Osidi, and his team visited the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The minister emphasized the need to address housing challenges affecting Nigerian women.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim pointed out that many women still struggle with housing insecurity despite making up a significant portion of the population. She described the partnership as a step toward bridging the gender gap in homeownership and financial empowerment.

She also dismissed the traditional belief that only men should provide shelter, calling it outdated. According to her, homeownership is critical for women’s financial independence. “Housing is a key pillar of women’s financial independence,” she stated.

The minister further shared her concerns about the conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, where she recently visited. She expressed deep concern over the poor living conditions of women and girls in those camps.

She added that housing challenges are not limited to IDP camps but affect women across Nigeria. She reaffirmed her commitment to policies that promote better housing opportunities for women.
